Mottram St Andrew Methodist Church
Built in 1894, Mottram St Andrew Methodist Church is the only Christian place of worship within the village although the village sits within the Anglican Parish of Prestbury. The church began its life as a congregation which met above a silk-weaving factory at Silverthorne, Alderley Road. The Chapel was opened on 16th January 1895 since then there have been 30 ministers in pastoral charge.
Over more than 120 years there have been a few amendments/additions to the chapel – the organ in 1925, the school room/kitchen in 1958 and more recently around the Millennium, the toilet facilities. The wooden cross at the front of the church was donated to the church by Mottram Hall Chapel when it closed and at the back of the church is the village War Memorial and on Remembrance Sunday the names of those who fell in the World Wars are read out during the Village Remembrance Service.
During the year, the Chapel provides weekly worship along with several special events during the year including:
Brownie and Guide Parades, Village Remembrance Service, Village Christingle Service, Open Air Service, Christmas Carolling around the village, Harvest Service and Tea, Christmas Eve, Christmas Day and Easter celebrations, alongside the occasional services such as baptisms, weddings and funerals.
The Chapel serves the whole of the village of Mottram and is part of the wider Alderley Edge and Knutsford Methodist Circuit, a group of 8 churches. As a Christian community, we are here to worship God, to love one another and to serve the community in which we are situated. The church is a fair-trade church, serving fair-trade tea and coffee at all occasions.
We meet every Sunday at 9.30am and have a Fellowship Group which meets on the 2nd Thursday of every month at 1.30pm (except August) in Chapel. We aim for all our services to be accessible to people of all ages and backgrounds.
Our rooms are available for hire by contacting the Church Secretary, Ian Wright on 583704 and the minister, Rev Ben Clowes, is available for pastoral concerns, baptisms, marriages and funerals on 583337.
